Parish War Memorial

The Parish War Memorial stands in the churchyard at Thurstaston.  It commemorates those who fell in the First and Second World Wars from both Thurstaston and Irby.  Named on it are:

Thomas BAKER
Fred CARR, MM
Charles FAIRBANKS
Edwin LESTER
Frank LESTER, VC (additional information available here
William Lee MADDOCK

who died in the First World War and

Harry R BENTLEY
Frank ATKISS
Wilfred CARR
Robert CHRISTIE
Cyril FAIRCLOUGH
Alan John GRIFFITHS
Thomas Derek JONES
Eric LARNER
William NUGENT
Frank PEERS
Joseph ROBERTS
John Donald WATT
George Leslie SPARKES

who died in the Second World War.  It is unusual to see more names from the Second World War but this reflects the expansion of the Village of Irby in the 1920s and 1930s.

Sadly it is most unlikely that the citation for Fred Carr's Military Medal will have survived.  To read about Frank Lester's Victoria Cross, go here.
